GW/Consignment Goodies and Some Questions

Hello everyone! I haven't had much time to post lately. Our snow days have all past and I'm back to work, and back to reality!! However, I have found time to stop by my local GW store. Here are some of the goodies that I found. I'm not sure what in the world I am going to do with the wood boxes with lids, but I'm sure I will think of something. We are Ohio State fans at my house, but those will definitely have to get a makeover!! I just love the tiny wood-framed mirror. I was going to paint it but decided to keep it the original wood stain. The little peg rack will find a home somewhere after it is primmed up a bit. The shelf really needs some TLC also. I will post pics after I get them finished...who knows when that will be!

Here is another GW find, the little black tin candle holder (that is what I am going to use it for), and I bought the star ornaments for around 30 cents on clearance at a local store. I think they will be cute painted for next Christmas.

Ok here are the items that I am really excited about. My friend and I took our sons to the YMCA for their indoor soccer practice last Saturday. We had two hours to kill. Right next to the Y is a consignment funiture/housewares shop that I never knew was there! Look at the treasures I found. The prices weren't quite as good as GW, but still worth grabbing. The hogscraper candle holder was $4.98, the basket was a whopping .98 cents! The wood box, which is by far my favorite item, was just $4.98 also!! And the bread board was $2.00. So in all I paid like $13!!!!

Now to my questions. Would you paint the box or keep it the original wood color? I am going back and forth with it. Also, I want to paint and grunge/prim up the basket. Has anyone ever done that? I'm sure many of you have. Would I just spray paint a basecoat of black and then spray/brush a topcoat on?? Any suggestions will be appreciated!! I look forward to reading your comments.

Oh, I also visited one of my favorite prim/colonial stores the other day. I'll post my goodies as soon as I take some pics.

Now I'm off to tackle some cleaning. My husband is hunting and my sons are at All-County Band tryouts so I have a little "me" time this morning. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend!

  1. Oh my gosh !!! Loveeee Loveeee all your finds ! You got some great deals. As to your ? to paint or not to paint....I would, because it gives them that time worn prim look that we all love. I spray painted a basket in flat black and it worked great. I didn't try applying a second coat of a different color. (may do that)

  4. I love all of your wonderful finds!!! Can't wait to see them all Primmed up.
As for painting the box...I would...and for painting baskets...that's jus' up my alley...LOL
I have a "thing" for baskets...I don't paint all of them but when I do...I paint a base coat and then a top coat...I use a paint brush for mine...it's time consuming...but I like being able to get the entire basket covered...plus, I'm a bit on the neurotic side...LOL Anyway, after my paint it all dry...I hand sand it to get the old look...then get my favorite brown shoe polish out and rub it all over the basket. Then you are done.
Here's a link to my blog showing a basket that I did this treatment on. Might give you and idea if this is what you are lookin' for.

  5. Hi Stacy! I can't believe we are so much alike! The way everyone just knows what they want to do and goes for it so effortlessly while I'm sitting here struggling on what color to paint a little shelf. Lol! I'm glad I'm not the only indecisive one! Thank you so much for giving me a straight answer on my walls-- that is what I'm wanting! I've been asking around but getting so many wishy-washy answers. I just know my prim blog friends will help me settle this one. Hehe! I love the tan that was already on my walls when we moved in our home. It's a little bit darker, but I really love it compared to the lighter tan color. It's Sherwin-Williams 6107 Nomadic Desert. Oh my! I just looked it up on their website to see if they still carry it. I guess so because that color was used on the HGTV Dream Home 2010! Anyway, it stands up well with 3 kids around!

Now, to your post... you found some good stuff! I paint everything only because I have so much wood in my home and the paint stands out more than the wood stain. I have a smaller basket that I painted with the same paint I used on the wall of the room. When it was dried, I brushed over the whole thing with black paint really heavy, and then wiped it off. It was tedious but I love the way it turned out. You can slightly see the dk. sage green underneath, but the black is heavy in the creases. It's hard to explain. I have spray painted baskets before also, but I like the way this one turned out better. Whatever you decide, I know it will be prim beautiful!

    Blessings,
    Angie

  6. Hi Stacy,
I just found your blog the other day and signed up as a follower. I from Ohio too...southeastern part.
What great finds you got!! Our stores around here have not had much lately.
To paint or not to paint? I would paint the basket...I have hand painted some of mine and then sanded them to make them look more primitive. About the box...I think it looks good the way it is, but it would also look good painted. So, I guess I'm not much help on that one.
Hope you are having a great weekend.

  7. What GREAT finds!! I haven't found much at the thrift stores lately, but I did find a few things today. Gotta love great finds at great prices : )

Ok, here is my opinion... I would definitely paint the basket and the box. I think painting and sanding a little bit and following it up with stain will make it look prim perfect!! Can't wait to see your make-overs.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  8. Hi Stacy, sounds like you got a good amount of opinions going so far, but I will throw mine in too. I would paint both the basket and the box. LOVE the box! I live in a log house and I think paint breaks it up so there isn't so much wood, even though my hubby thinks it should all be wood! Truly depends. Some antiques I would never paint, but great stuff like your box I think should be. Anyway, I have a large basket that needs redone. Good to hear others basket painting ideas. I can't believe what you paid for those wonderful items!!! There hasn't been much of anything at our TS lately. Good luck with them and hope to see pics when you are done!

  11. Love your finds! Great goodies . I agree with other girls, paint the box , sanded a little bit and then stained to give an old look.
